On 21 May 2026, the new Regulation (EU) 2024/1157 on shipments of waste will come into full force, bringing significant changes for companies involved in cross-border waste shipments. The aim is to modernise processes, make them more transparent and significantly improve environmental standards for waste exports.

Overview of the new features

Notifications and transport operations must be created and transmitted electronically in future. Paper forms will no longer be valid.
All relevant information: type and quantity of waste, origin, destination, transport route and parties involved must be provided digitally before transport begins.
Transports on the so-called ‘green list’, which were not previously subject to notification requirements, are also affected.
Introduction of a central EU system for the electronic transmission and exchange of information and documents.
Interoperability between the European DIWASS system and other digital solutions is planned with the aim of enabling smooth communication between authorities and companies.
